Towada Lake & The Oirase River Gorge

Yesterday we made our way to Towada Lake and the Oirase River gorge. What makes Lake Towada special is that it occupies the caldera (a cauldron-like volcanic feature formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption) of an active volcano. These large volcanic eruptions occurred about 55,000, 25,000, and 13,000 years ago.  Before you get to the beautiful lake located within the mountains, you go through the Oirase River gorge area. It is extremely beautiful this time of year. The foliage this time of year is a huge tourist attraction.

Justin was a little bit hesitant for me to go on the trip since it was 2.5 hours away being due any day. However, I was feeling great, and jumped at the opportunity to get out of the city and explore some of the beautiful Japanese nature.

I am hoping to take my Mom and Justin back there possibly this week or next (pending baby) when the leaves are really in full color.
